Through Friends of Roscomare we have an art teacher Tuesday-Friday so all children (TK-5th grade) are able to tap into their creativity throughout the year. Our art teacher also works with our teachers to collaborate and integrate art into their existing curriculum in the classrooms.
Students at Roscomare gain exposure to a variety of art mediums and techniques as they create original art, often inspired by a studied artist or famous work of art. Our Art program provides scaffolding in the basic elements and principles of art so students can utilize that knowledge to create more complex pieces of art as they progress through the year. Every child creates a portfolio of work that includes landscapes, abstract art, sculpture and a self-portrait. Our art is based on the California Content Standards for Visual Arts.
Examples of the type of art your child may explore by grade are featured below.
After school art classes are also offered by our art teacher to 1st-5th graders for those that want to further cultivate their art skills. These exciting classes are available throughout the year after school on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. Classes are announced and registration opens for those classes the first week of school. There are 4 sessions of after school classes available.
In the 2017/18 school year, for the first term of after school classes we are beginning with puppetry art! Students will create several types of puppets, and learn how art can be used to tell stories and express emotion. Students will work in 2D and 3D, and have the opportunity to work in mediums such as paper machete and cut paper silhouette. At the end of the session students will have a chance to use their puppets in a short performance of their creation! Sign up for after school classes will take place online the first week of school, stay tuned for registration as these classes fill up.
